How to Get A Customers Attention (online)
Trying to get your customers attention can be one of the hardest things to do.
This past weekend, we decided to sell a wooden swing that has been in our family for over a decade.
My dad dropped it off for our boys to use last year, but after our most recent winter, several of the boards began to go bad.
Although we did some repairs, it became pretty clear that the swing was on its last legs, so we decided to list it on Marketplace for sale.
Within 12 hours, we had no less than 10 people asking if the swing was still available.
After responding to everyone early Saturday morning, three replied within a couple of hours and asked further questions.
Of these, two people asked if they could come to pick up the swing.
I told the first person yes… Five hours later, no word from the first person.
When the second person followed up again, I told him the swing was his if he wanted it.
One hour later, he was at my house, handed over the cash, and drove away with the swing.
Several days later, still no reply from the first person.
Why do I tell you this story?
Customer Attention Statistics
These statistics are reflective of EXACTLY what you can expect from selling online.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re selling a swing on Marketplace, or a product or service to a customer.
- Hundreds will look at your offer.
- 20 to 30% will inquire about your offer.
- 10% are your real potential buyer.
Why does this matter?
Well, if you do the math, it takes a whole heck of a lot of people looking at what you have to offer to have an opportunity to sell.
When clients call me to let me know they want to start selling online, they have no idea how much effort it will take to get enough eyeballs on their business in order to sell just one product.
Sure, there are plenty of options:
- Google and Facebook ads
- SEO and content marketing
- Social media
- Online directories
- Email marketing
Depending on your product or service, it might even make sense to list it on an online marketplace like Kijiji or craigslist.
Considering all of the options available, and the potential cost involved, there are a few questions you’ll want to consider in order to ensure you get the most from your investment.
How to Get Your Customers Attention
Is this a place where my ideal customers spend time?
Does this platform make sense for what I am selling?
What is the potential return on my investment?
If you want to have any hope of selling your products or services online, you’ll need to put yourself smack dab in front of your ideal customers.
The more eyeballs on what you have to offer, the better chance you have of selling anything.
